Ever walked through your home & felt like every room belongs to a different house? It's one of the questions I get asked most. So here are the 10 things that actually create a cohesive home, in plain terms.
1. Start with a vision board. Always.
This is the one people want to skip. Don't. Even as a designer with a head full of vision, I make one for every single project. Without it, you end up pulling from everywhere. One week you're into chocolate browns, the next you're onto something completely different, & none of it connects. A vision board is your north star & your lane. Hands down the best thing you can do for your reno or build. Whether you're overhauling the whole house or doing one room at a time, every project & every decision gets guided by this.
2. Pick one overall direction.
Name the aesthetic you're steering towards. This is what stops the impulse buys. You won't grab that funky retro sofa that screams 70s just because it looks unreal in the showroom, not when you know your home is English Cottage. Can you mix styles & make it work? Absolutely. But you do that here, at the vision stage, on purpose. Not by accident on the shop floor.
3. Lock a colour scheme.
Pick a core palette of three to five colours & carry it through the whole home. Each room can lean on different ones in different amounts, but they all pull from the same set.
4. Choose your materials & finishes, then repeat them.
Your timber tones, your stone, your metals. Pick your handful & let them show up across the home. Same brass, same warmth, room to room. That repetition is the quiet thread that ties everything together.
5. Get it all out in front of you & play.
Now get specific. Colours, textures, light. Move things around. Swap, layer, sit with it. Keep going until it feels good, not just looks good. This is where it clicks.
6. Plan your layout & flow.
How you move through a space matters as much as how it looks. Traffic flow, floorplans, where everything sits. Get this right & the home works, not just photographs well.
7. Layer your lighting.
Light changes everything. Layer it. Overhead, task, lamps. Keep your light temperature consistent room to room, or the whole home feels disjointed.
8. Think about fixture & finish placement.
Where things land is its own skill. Heights, spacing, clearances. Get it right & a room just works, even if you can't say why.
9. Carry the thread through every room.
Stay true to the theme. Each room can have its own personality & little nods to different things, but the main vision runs through all of it. Variations on one story. Don't forget your hallways & in-between spaces, that's where the thread carries or breaks.
10. Visualise it before you commit.
Designers model it first, & now you can too, no technical skills needed. AI can bring your vision to life from a photo & a clear brief, so you see it before you spend a cent. Just feed it your real thinking. Your board, your palette, your selections. Not "make my kitchen nice."
