Search "where do I start with my renovation" and you'll get a lot of good advice, set a budget, check permits, find a contractor, get your finances in order. All genuinely useful if you're managing the build itself. But if you've already got that side sorted, or you're doing a refresh rather than a structural renovation, none of it actually answers the question you're stuck on: where do I start on what it's actually going to look like?
That's a different starting point, and it's the one that trips people up the most, not because it's harder, but because there's no obvious first step. Here's one.
The Real Reason "Where Do I Start" Feels So Hard
It's rarely a lack of ideas. Most people starting a renovation or refresh already have a folder of saved images, a Pinterest board, or a mental picture of a look they love. The overwhelm comes from not knowing how to turn scattered inspiration into an actual, ordered plan because "I like this kitchen" and "I like this colour" and "I like this tile" don't automatically add up to one cohesive room. Without a starting point, every new idea just adds to the pile instead of narrowing it down.
Start With a Feeling, Not a Room
Before choosing anything, it helps to name what you actually want the finished space to feel like, not what it should contain, but how it should feel to be in. Warm and grounded? Bright and airy? Considered but relaxed? This sounds abstract, but it's genuinely more useful than starting with "I need a new benchtop," because it gives every subsequent decision something to be measured against.
Then Pick One Anchor
Once you know the feeling, choose one fixed point to build everything else around. We call it a focal point in each room. Usually, a bunch of materials, colours, cabinetry tone, a stone, inspiration images. This starts forming a palette. This is the single most useful thing you can do at the very beginning, because it turns an open-ended, overwhelming question ("what do I want my home to look like?") into a much smaller one for every decision after it ("does this work with the anchor?").
Sort Your Inspiration into What It's Actually Telling You
If you've got a folder of saved images, go back through them, not to pick favourites, but to notice patterns. Are you consistently drawn to warm tones or cool ones? Matte finishes or gloss? Busy patterns or simple, quiet surfaces? Most people's "all over the place" Pinterest boards actually have a clear thread running through them once you look for it, even if it didn't feel that way while saving.
Set the Whole-Home Vision First. Even If You Tackle It Room by Room
It's tempting to think you can solve "where do I start" by just picking one room and getting to it. But a room-by-room approach without an overarching vision is exactly how homes end up feeling like a series of disconnected decisions rather than one considered place, a kitchen that doesn't relate to the living room next to it, a palette that shifts noticeably from one end of the house to the other.
The fix isn't to avoid starting room by room, you can absolutely execute that way, tackling one space at a time as budget and timing allow. The fix is making sure the vision comes first, for the whole home, before the first room is finalised. That means deciding the feeling, the anchor material or tone, and the broader palette across the entire house up front, even if only one room is actually being worked on right now. Every room after that is then delivered against a plan that already exists, not invented fresh each time.
This is the difference between a home that was built one room at a time and a home that feels like it was built one room at a time.
If You Want This Part Done For You
This is exactly the starting point a Custom Design & Style Pack gives you, a clear design direction and mood board created specifically for your space, before a single finish or fixture is chosen, so every decision after that has something solid to work from. And if you're planning to work through your home over time, that same direction can extend across multiple rooms, so each one you tackle is building toward the same whole-home vision rather than starting from scratch.
